Is there a societal expectation for a man to have a girlfriend or not?

Is there a societal expectation for a man to have a girlfriend or not? I tried to ask my therapist this and I don't know if she understood the question. I feel there is and it's very troubling to me.

No. You'll happen upon one naturally as long as you pursue your own happiness first. Chicks think it's attractive regardless of how fricked up you look.

Promoting inaction is such horrible advice

Not even remotely true on any level.

Because I've never had one and probably never will

There is a social expectation for humans in general to be socially adept. One sign of a human being who is socially adept is being partnered with another human. Having friends, a social circle, girlfriend/boyfriend etc are all things that signal to other people that you are able to function with other humans.

Take it from someone who has had a girlfriend, it’s not worth the head and heartache. Want companionship? Adopt a puppy. Need sex? Find an escort who you vibe with and make her your regular. Everything falls into place once you have the income to live your best life so focus on that primarily

But I'd like to experience it. I'd like to have even the slightest shred of validation that I'm not completely undesirable

        >needs validation
You only think you need it. Once you get it you’ll realize how overrated it really is and as you age you will simply care less and less about what other people think of you.

Yes, but more-often-than-not its better to be single. Most women are terrible (most men are too but that's not the point of this post).
If you're not in a relationship you are deemed a failure of a man because you cannot attract a mate.
If you are in a relationship you are deemed a failure of a man because she isn't a 10/10 supermodel.
If you are in a relationship with a 10/10 supermodel you are deemed a failure of a man because she's clearly just using you because she's way out of your league.

You're only ever going to please everyone in this regard if you are stunningly handsome and so is your partner, but then if you were you wouldn't have needed to make this post.
The world is cruel, don't worry about finding a partner unless you run into a female that truly makes you happy.

Yes there is. Doesn't mean you have to follow it or that you're better off for following it. If you want to be a brainless conforming sheep sure.

I'm not worthless if I don't have one?

I don't think there is a societal expectation to have a significant other but there is a societal expectation to have friends
Every day at college the instructor makes allusions like "think about the most extraverted wacky person among your friends" or "when you are studying with your buddies" and it feel kind of strange to realize that they actually expect everyone to have friends

Yes obviously. The only time its acceptable to not have a girlfriend is if you're married or getting constant hookups.

I'm 6'4 and muscular, but have only ever dated once. You aren't missing out on much. I would date more, but it's impossible to find a woman who wants to focus on longevity and philosophy instead of money and family.
