It's the result of social media and women gaining more power in society. Women have been insecure about their appearance forever, but that was because their entire value in society came from their attractiveness to men. Now that's no longer true because they have the choice to live independently.

Conversely, men didn't used to have to care what women thought of their looks because single women were always desperate to get a husband, but now that they're unrestrained by financial needs they are free to be as picky as they want (and women are naturally extremely picky), amplified by unrealistic expectations from the internet and mass media.

So now guys are in a similar position to how women used to be, having to put a ton of care into their looks in order to get any female attention whatsoever.

      >unrestrained by financial needs
both single men and women have literally never been so deep in the hole financially
all I can think about every match on a dating app is how this b***h is literally only talking to me because her parents have run out of money and she needs someone to pay her rent

And therein lies the dilemma of Pandora's Box. You're always left wondering - is she with me because of my wealth, because of what I can provide her? Of what she can siphon from me? Does she really genuinely give a shit? Is she merely pretending to laugh at my jokes, does she enjoy my company? Is she serious when she says she'd like to continue this relationship, to have kids together?
The freedom to choose has been so thoroughly dispersed throughout modernity that she can leave you high and dry and shack up with someone else, while you're left to clean up the mess.
        All that time, for nothing.

Even if women had no rights the paradigm of desireable men would still change because now that jobs are so much easier and safer than they were 100 years ago, things like neoteny replacing traditional masculinity is just inevitable.

Because in modern day, both men and women can become self sufficient millionaires off of their personal image alone, via social media and advertising. The market availability for this is endless and almost completely open for women, meaning a literal 3/10 has the ability and potential to build a million dollar social media presence. On the flip side, mens standards for being able to build a social media presence and income on the back of image alone is ultra strict and you have a 1% chance of success as a 7/10. To have a 50% chance to succeed as a man in this realm, you will need to be a 9/10, but at that point most of them already work in industry anyway. (Modeling)

Basically it is driven by social media and the money to be made for literally just looking good enough, but to have a reasonable chance at all you need to be 8/10 and completely fit as a man.
    >but xyz YouTuber is fat! Ugly! No hair! Etc..
So, yeah, there is always outliers and exceptions, it is not a hard and fast rule. But out of all the chumps and weird dudes who get popular and make money online, from looks mind you not from comedy or gaming or whatever, there is millions about millions who are almost the same who do not. It is not a strong argument at all.
