Why do Late Gen X and Millennials love Consumption so Much?

I'm talking about anyone born from around 1975 to 1990. Those are the types you see buying all the Marvel and Star Wars things and are adults into lego, funko pops, and gaming. They are the ones who have massive collections of figurines or funkos. Somehow people born later in the 90s escaped it and so did people born before 1975. 1975 to 1990 borns are really into this.

I have the same issue they do but with other things and experiences so I'm not judging. Just wondered. Is it peaking in 80s or 90s childhood and then seeing everything go downhill? The 80s and 90s were full of ads all over the place too.

and knowing is half the battle.

says they were conditioned to want these things through television programming, and because it worked so well all the 'fond memories' of their childhood revolve around these dust collectors. I broke free of it all when i was about 30 i just purged all the junk out of my life i dont even own books or cd anymore, its not for everyone but im happier without all the shit.

Boomers where the worst in collecting bullshit. Its all a holdover from them. Porcelein, Silver Ware, Cups, Dolls, Magazines and what not. Lots of shit that they bought for a ton of money thats worthless now. Gen X was less bad in this and Millenials are going strong again. It may jump a generation.

          Anonymous

I've noticed Boomer women do a lot more of the collecting though. They love China cabinets and tons of dolls they never use. But for them it seems less like being into a fandom like you see in Millennials and late Xers (early and mid Xers don't really care as much).

The excessive fandom thing is quite typical American though. I know lots of people who collect weird shit but no one who does it with marvel, star wars or whatever.

So what causes less fandom in Germany? You see Millennials and late Xers into fandoms a lot and debating about episodes of shows, or movies, or comics all the time.

Not sure but movies and shit are just not taken that seriously here. Even if you like a franchise or are a "fan" its just about watching the stuff not the money grubbing insanity around it. Maybe the marketing isn't as strong for this and people are just way poorer than in the US. There are no tech jobs where 20y olds make hundreds of thousands a year. Median is like 1800€ a month with old people taking the fattest share of higher income.

I'm not even talking about just consumption that requires money. I'm talking spending hours a day on websites talking about fan theories or making fanfiction or comparing different things in the franchise, debating what is and isn't canon, and about character development. For some reason once you get to 1993 births or so they're less interested in it and are more casual than the old fandoms.

We did that around age 14. You usually grow out of it. Not that i would hate it actually as long its not some merch idiocy. Its certainly more fun for me to talk about lore then talking about car rims, your 5th Spain vacation and what kind of floor you are being forced to lay by your wife.

I did always drive a Golf and still do but more for practical reasons. Gold 3 to 5 are just sturdy cheap and easy/cheap to maintain. I just care about getting from A to B though. Mechanic talk bores me to death but i have to endure.

Ohh and i forgot the worst thing. Soccer. morons spending massive money and are die hard fans of fricking soccer clubs and talk about soccer 24/7. Its fully normalized to be a total soccer nerd with 0 other thoughts or ideas. I personally put this on the same level as marvel nerds collecting funko pops. God i hate soccer talk.

I was born in 1993 and I’ve mostly escaped this, although my one weak spot is I do have a pretty expansive magic the gathering collection for playing EDH that I’ve been accumulating for like 18 years at this point. Other than those cards and the PC I built myself, I don’t own any toys, ‘merch’, figurines or anime posters or anything like that.

That's a fairly small amount of McDonalds for an average-sized person, I'd say? The main reason fast-food cooks so fast and "lasts" so short is that there isn't much density to it. I wouldn't WANT to eat a double helping of nuggets in that timeframe, but I could easily.

I was born in 89. The only stuff I collect is fishing lures, was collecting rods but stopped at 30. My wife has 8 of those 30.
I have a lot of lures but it's Maybe like 500 dollars worth in all. But that's after years and years of collecting. Oh yeah, I also hoard ammo. And I have a full deep freezer full of meat.
That's about all that I have in excess.

I don't know. I fit that mold and I fell into the "you will own nothing" no logo part of the generation. We always mocked mindless consoomers since that is what our boomer parents were noted for. I think Chipman is my age and he is like an alien species. I do know he's exactly the sort of guy we would have bullied (like the guys who were teenagers but still obsessed over kids toys like transformers).

In America there are many Millennials who are socialist but spend money all the time. Their idea is more "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" so they spend like the Boomers did.

They are also the biggest consumer market for remakes of movies and video games. We wouldn't be getting the same shit fed to us if these morons didn't keep throwing money at them.

I will never get this whole Superhero fandom.
I maybe watched some Spiderman or Batman as a 10yo.
Why are so many adults storming the cinemas every time a new "le avengers" movie comes out, isnt it marketed towards kids?

It was a manufactured left-wing narrative. The purpose was to bolster Antifa and get them to the streets so they would start to reenact the movies. In 2010's one of the most common things you would hear in online debates was a superhero or some movie analogy by the left.
