I started going to cons just to try to make new friends, not even for sex or a gf. But I've failed even doing that.

I go to panels and walk around the exhibitors and vendors section. I've made small talk with people I've ran into but it's hard for me to keep the conversation going.
same, I've been going to cons and cosplayign for close to 8 years now. Bringing a camera to cons and taking pictures of people, trying to talk to people in panel lines, in panels with common interests, at shoots for series I like, and in the halls
My experience is people basically just giving short awkward replies when I talk, leaving the conversation, and then never getting invited to any parties or really finding much else.
At this point I'm 30+ when I was in my 20s when I started going, now I'm the creepy old dude who no one wants to talk to because I'm old enough to be their dad so the chance of me losing my virginity with a nerdy girl is basically zero. I just go to watch the cosplay competitions and the panels at this point and avoid everything else.
